The UEFA Europa League is a professional football club competition run by UEFA that is played exclusively in the countries of the European Union. It is currently the third most prestigious European club competition, after the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
The competition features 64 clubs and is the highest level of club football to be played in Europe. Clubs are split into two leagues, the top club competition in each nation within UEFA receives one qualifying berth for the competition. The domestic league champions from the host nation are guaranteed to progress through to the group stage of the competition. The remaining 63 places are allocated to clubs from each of the other 63 members of UEFA based on their UEFA club coefficient. The 64 clubs are ranked according to their UEFA club coefficients, with those with the highest coefficient being placed first and those with the lowest being placed last in the UEFA club coefficient ranking.
The current champion is Manchester United, who defeated Manchester City in the 2019 final. Manchester United are the most successful club in the history of the competition with seven titles. The competition has seen two champions, Juventus and Barcelona, win the competition three times each. The runner-up has been Barcelona, Roma and Chelsea, each of whom have won it twice.
Teams representing the EU nations or other countries will usually use the name of the country in the local language. It was not until 1995 that the competition officially adopted the name UEFA Cup, although it was used informally since the 1970s. The name UEFA Europa League was adopted for the 2006–07 season and has been used since then.

The competition was known as the European Cup until 1992, when it was renamed the European Champion Clubs' Cup. From 1996, the competition was known as the UEFA Champions League (either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Champions Cup in English, but never the Champions League).
